His First Mayweek

His first Mayweek, or, The scholar's progress : a speculation with music, or a concert operetta, in five scenes : for male and female soloists male-voice chorus, and two pianos / (words and music) by Peter Tranchell.

Manuscript score (105p.); 36cm. a scanned copy of the original manuscript is available (thanks to a member of the cast at a performance in 1964).

Cambridge, 1963.

We will be typesetting songs from the work as time permits, responding in particular to any requests.

The first song score to be published here is Just a toothbrush and pyjamas (a PDF score is behind that link).

We are fortunate to be able to make available two recordings of this song, one from the first performance in 1964, the other from the 2005 commemoration weekend. Both feature Peter Brice as Christopher Barnwell, Alan Opie as Mr Hugo ─îintz, Geoffrey Weaver on one of the piano parts (in 1964 it was PAT himself playing the harder 2nd piano part), and several members of the Caius Chorus.

The 1964 recording is on YouTube, and features some different verses from the version of the score we've used for typesetting:

The 2005 version may be played using the player below or download the MP3:
