These settings were composed by Peter Tranchell, Precentor (Director of Music) at Gonville & Caius College, Cambridge, for use by the chapel choir in the regular round of evening services. As far as we know the work has not previously been performed elsewhere, and no recordings exist.
The Magnificat is an energetic romp requiring precision and athleticism, particularly in the demanding fugue section. The Nunc Dimittis requires precise pitching, and a Tenor with a top D (sotto voce).
PAT's notes on both the Magnificant and the Nunc Dimittis state:
Written April 1970 for Tenor Solo, A.T.Br.Br.B.B. and organ in C.
Dedicated to the mysterious Dr Wotherspoon who sometimes booked a guestroom in Gonville & Caius College but never turned up, always cancelling at the last moment.
Version for S.A.A.T.Br.B.B and organ August 1988.
