Psalm 133: The Peace of God

This beautiful setting of Psalm 133 incorporates verses from Colossians 3. The setting has now been published by CMS, in Peter Tranchell, Three Responsorial Psalms (CMS 046), available to purchase here so we have removed the score from this site. Note that the opening forte in the organ part is in error - it should be "mp". Also note that while the score may say crotchet=92, PAT himself took it at around crotchet=62, con molto rubato!

Originally written for unison men's voices, it could equally be performed by any combination, and nowadays features regularly on the music list of the girls' choir at at St. George's Cathedral, Southwark.

This psalm was included on the Music From Caius LP, recorded live in 1978 at a commemoration service - use the player below or download the MP3:

Tranchell Psalm 133

Antiphon: Even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. (Colossians 3:13)

v1: Behold how good and joyful a thing it is brethren

to dwell together in unity.

Antiphon: Let the peace of God rule in your hearts. (Colossians 3:15)

v2: It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down unto the beard;

even unto Aaron's beard, and went down to the skirts of his clothing.

Antiphon: Let the peace of God rule in your hearts.

v3: Like the dew of Hermon, which fell upon the hill of Zion.

Antiphon: Even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.

v3 (cont'd): For there the LORD promised his blessing, and life forevermore.

Antiphon: Let the peace of God rule in your hearts.

Glory be...
